Abstract
This study developed a project-based Python game development program to foster middle school students’ computational thinking and learning motivation, and assessed its effectiveness. Designed using the ADDIE model and aligned with the 2022 revised national Technology curriculum, the program was piloted with 20 first-year middle school students, revised based on their feedback, and validated by ten experts. The finalized program comprised four stages, including goal setting, planning, implementation, and evaluation, based on Kilpatrick’s project learning model and the BIE Gold Standard PBL framework. Game development was selected as the theme to match learners’ interests and real-world relevance, incorporating strategies such as generative AI-based feedback, step-by-step scaffolding, and collaborative reflection. Implemented over twelve sessions with 60 first-year middle school students in Seoul, the program was evaluated through a single-group pretest–posttest design. Results indicated statistically significant gains in overall computational thinking and its sub-factors, alongside improvements in learning motivation, including academic interest and self-efficacy, and generally high learner satisfaction. Taken together, these findings provide preliminary evidence for computational thinking instruction in the AI era by demonstrating the applicability of text-based programming education and its integration with problem-solving learning within the middle school Technology curriculum.
