이 연구의 목적은 초등학교 사회 교과서에 반영된 인구 교육 내용을 분석하여 이에 내재된 한계와 문제점을 논하는 것이다. 이 연구에서는 특히 인구 교육의 목표, 내용 요소, 가치 접근 방식 및 수준에 주목하여, 2007년 개정 교육과정에 따라 편찬된 교과서의 인구 단원에 대한 내용 분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 초등학교 사회 교과서의 인구 교육 내용은 도시와 촌락 문제, 저출산·고령화 문제를 중심으로 구성되어 있으며, 명시적인 학습 목표는 지식·이해 및 기능에 초점을 두고 있음이 드러났다. 하지만, 많은 인구 교육 내용이 가치 지향성을 내포하고 있으며 국가와 지역의 관점에서 다루어지는 반면, 개인의 관점은 고려되고 있지 않았다. 또, 세계 수준에 대한 관심도 부족하였다. 연구 결과와 관련하여, 초등학교 사회 교과서의 인구 교육 내용 구성 및 접근 방식에 대한 개선 방안을 제시하였다.
Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the problems and limitations of population education in elementary schools. For this purpose, a content analysis of population education in social studies textbooks for grades 4 & 6 was performed. The textbooks were developed in the 2007 revised national curriculum period. The major focuses of analysis were goals, content areas, value approaches, and levels of population education. Four main findings emerged from the analysis. First, population problems (especially urban & rural problems, low birth rate & ageing problems) were the main topics of population education. Second, explicit learning goals of population education were knowledge and skills. Third, many of contents were written in a value-oriented way regardless of their explicit goals. Fourth, population problems were mostly dealt at a regional, or a national level without considering an individual level. Based on these findings, several ideas for improving contents selection and description in population education were suggested.
