Abstract
This study aims to discuss place schema theory as a knowledge system about subjective place experience of individuals and to extract its implication in geographical education of social studies. Place schema is a emotional and tacit knowledge system, which individuals have, regarding places that are social constructs. This place schema functions as a mechanism that causes development of place patterns due to place system and interaction, in the process of forming place identity. Especially, place schema affects personal cognition and behavior related to a place and is affected by society and culture that an individual or a group belongs to. This place schema can be used as a clue to read order and power in place and landscape that are social fruits. Moreover, this helps in interpreting how people understand places and encode their place experience. In particular, place schema can be a foundation to explore personal geography in geographical education of social studies. It is also useful in finding and fixing geographical misconceptions of students during exploration. In addition, it facilitates geographic enquiry as a framework of perception to help students look upon the world, from a geographical perspective. Lastly, representation of place schema varies from individual to individual and makes geographical education of difference possible to consider difference and diversity.
