Abstract

This study aims to comprehensively analyze territorial education research conducted in Korea from 1991 to 2024 using AI-based big data analysis techniques and to propose future directions. To this end, the study employed an integrated methodology combining text mining, network analysis, neural topic modeling (NTM), and GPT-based topic forecasting to examine the chronological flow of research keywords, the structural relationships between topics, and the potential for future thematic transitions. The analysis revealed that from the 1990s to the mid-2010s, Korean territorial education research primarily focused on nationalistic keywords such as Dokdo, national identity, sovereignty, and patriotism. From the mid-2000s, citizenship-oriented keywords such as textbooks, conflict, and civic consciousness began to emerge. Since the late 2010s, there has been a noticeable shift toward integrative and inquiry-based keywords such as geography, spatial thinking, digital, sustainability, and environment, which formed a denser and more interconnected network structure according to the network analysis. The analysis revealed that research on territorial education in South Korea has evolved across decades. In the 1990s, keywords such as “Dokdo,” “identity,” “sovereignty,” and “patriotism” demonstrated high centrality and frequency, reflecting a nationalist orientation. During the 2000s, terms like “textbook,” “conflict,” and “civic consciousness” emerged, indicating a shift toward citizenship education. From the 2010s onward, literacy-oriented and interdisciplinary keywords such as “digital literacy,” “spatial literacy,” “sustainability,” “environment,” and “data literacy” have become central to the discourse. Results from topic modeling and GPT-based time series forecasting further suggest that the expansion of these themes is likely to continue in the future. Based on these findings, this study argues for a paradigm shift in territorial education in South Korea—from a nationalism-oriented approach to an inquiry-based model that emphasizes literacy competencies and spatial awareness. It further proposes the need to design a digital- and AI-integrated territorial education framework, to incorporate sustainability and environmental perspectives, and to foster territorial sensitivity through the understanding of diverse and plural viewpoints. This study is significant in that it moves beyond fragmented, case-based approaches by applying AI-based quantitative analysis to provide an empirical overview of the structural trends and future directions of territorial education. The findings offer a foundational basis for curriculum innovation and educational policy development.
