이 글은 페미니즘을 둘러싼 이론적 논쟁에 대한 로티의 냉소적 태도가 그가 페미니즘 이슈의 중요성을 부정하기 때문이 아니라 이론과 실천에 대한 더 근원적인관점에서 비롯된 것임을 논구하기 위한 것이다. 마르크스가 생각한 대로 이론과 실천이 긴밀하게 연계되어 있다면 철학은 실천을 위한 이론적 지침을 제시해야 할 것이다. 그러나 로티의 ‘민주주의가 철학보다 앞선다’는 테제는 그와 같은 이론과 실천의 연계를 부정한다. 로티는 이론가로서 페미니즘 이슈에 참여하는 일은 페미니즘을 위한 이론적 토대를 발견하는 문제라기보다는 새로운 어휘를 창안하여 실천가들을 돕는 일종의 예언가내지 시인의 작업이라고 보고 있다. 논자는 이 글을 통해서 이론 없는 페미니즘이라고 할 수 있는 로티의 실용적 페미니즘의의 ‘이론적’ 전제를 논구하고 그의 관점이 어떤 실천적 유용성을 가질 수 있는지 고찰해 보고자하였다.
Abstract
This paper intends to reveal the reasons w hy R orty takes cynical stand tow ard the theoretical debate surrounding fem inism is not because he denies the im portance of the fem inism issue, but his point of view rooted in his m ore fundam ental perspective on theory and practice. If practice and theory is fundam entally connected w ith each other as M arx thought, philosophy should find and suggest the right theoretical guidelines for practice. H ow ever, R orty’s thesis, “T he Priority of D em ocracy to Philosophy” denies the inevitable association betw een theory and practice. Rorty regards the role of theorist as fem inist as the role of prophet or poet, w ho creates the new vocabulary to help the practitioners, not that of theorist w ho finds and lays the foundation of practice. I tried to discuss the ‘theoretical’ prem ises of Rorty’s fem inism , w hich is so called ‘fem inism w ithout theory’, and consider the practical usefulness of his fem inism .
