헤겔의 민족 개념에 관한 고찰 - 『예나 체계기획Ⅰ, Ⅲ』을 중심으로 -

본 논문의 목표는 『예나 체계기획Ⅰ, Ⅲ』을 중심으로 민족에 관한 헤겔의 논의를 규명하고, 그것의 함의를 고찰하는 것이다. 헤겔에 따르면, 역사 속에 등장하는 모든 민족은 두 가지 본질적인 활동을 전개한다. 첫째로, 민족은 지속적인 생존을 위하여 그들을 둘러싸고 있는 자연 세계를 지배한다. 민족은 언어를 통해 관념적으로 자연 세계를 지배하고, 도구와 노동을 통해 실제적으로 자연 세계를 지배한다. 그럼으로써 민족은 자연 세계의 제약으로부터 해방되고, 더 높은 차원의 목적을 추구할 수 있게 된다. 민족이 추구하는 더 높은 차원의 목적은 바로 민족정신이다. 민족의 본질적 목적인 민족정신의 실현은 민족을 구성하는 개인들의 능동적 활동을 통해서만 가능하다. 수많은 개인이 민족정신을 공통의 목적으로 삼고, 그것을 작품으로 만드는 활동을 전개할 때, 민족정신은 실현될 수 있다. 민족정신을 작품으로 만드는 공동의 활동과 그 결과물을 매개로 민족 구성원들은 고유한 민족 정체성을 형성한다.
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to clarify Hegel’s discussion on the nation and to examine its implications. According to Hegel, every nation that appears in history has two essential activities. First, people dominate the natural world that surrounds them in order to survive. People dominate the natural world ideologically through language, and practically dominate the natural world through tools and labor. In doing so, the nation can be freed from the constraints of the natural world and can pursue a higher level of purpose. The higher level of purpose that the nation pursues is the national spirit. The realization of the national spirit is possible only through the active activities of the individuals that are members of the nation. Numerous individuals should take the national spirit as a common purpose and engage in activities to realize it. A special national identity is formed between members of the nation through the activities of realizing the national spirit and the results of that activities.
