이 글은 하버마스가 실천적 영역의 철학의 기초를 새로이 수립하기 위하여 도입한 언어철학의 특성을 연구한 것이다. 하버마스는 처음에는 보편화용론의 기획을 수립하였으나, 이 기획의 기본적 전제들에 변화의 필요를 느끼면서 형식화용론의 기획으로 전환을 하였다. 하버마스의 소통행위이론은 형식화용론의 기초 위에 수립이 된다. 이러한 전환은 명시적으로는 4개의 타당성요구 주장에서 3개의 타당성 요구 주장으로의 전환과, 생활세계 개념의 도입이라는 두 가지 점에서 명백하지만, 이러한 전환의 배후에는 한 언명의 문자적 의미의 존재에 대한 인정의 문제와 언어 이해의 배경 지식에 관한 문제가 깔려 있다. 그리고 이러한 전환과 더불어 하버마스의 언어철학은 전체론적 성격을 갖게 되는데, 이 점은 하버마스가 하이데거와 가다머, 찰스 테일러 등의 언어철학에 대한 비판을 수행하면서 가졌던 입장과 상당한 긴장을 드러낸다. 그리고 하버마스 언어철학의 전체론적 성격은 그의 사상이 형이상학으로부터 자유롭지 않으며, 오히려 언어의 형이상학적 특성을 더욱 드러낸다는 테일러의 주장과 연결된다. 이 논문에서는 하버마스가 언급한, 소통적 언어사용과 전략적 언어사용과 관련된 4개의 테제, 즉 파생 테제, 기생 테제, 우선성 테제, 내재적 목적 테제 등이 어떻게 정당화되는지를 하버마스의 ‘언표내적’, ‘언표수반적’ 등의 개념을 활용하여 입증한다.
Abstract
This Thesis delves on features of Habermas's theory of language which he has introduced to provide a ground to theories in a practical area of philosophy. At first Habermas suggested the project of universal pragmatics. However, he felt the need of theoretical changes in it, and moved to another but quite related project of formal pragmatics. Habermas's theory of communicative action is based on the formal pragmatics. Changes were made in the number of validity claims, that is, from the four validity claims in universal pragmatics to the three in formal pragmatics, and in the introduction of the concept of the life-world in formal pragmatics. In the background of these changes there is a problem whether to recognize the theory of literal meaning and the background knowledge for linguistic understanding. Through these changes Habermas's theory of meaning takes the characteristic feature of meaning holism, which was at the heart of the philosophy by Heidegger, Gadamer, and Charles Taylor. This feature of meaning holism makes his stance coped with metaphysical implication. In this paper I also give a try to unproved 4 metaphysical theses concerning the relationship between the communicative use and the strategic use of language, that is, the derivation thesis, the parasitism thesis, the priority thesis, and the inherent telos thesis.
