Abstract

Such an interesting idea has been more and more reinforced since the death of Michel Foucault that Foucauldian and Habermasean philosophy can be complementary with one anther more than they supposed on many issues which caused their disharmony. But despite of multi-sided thoroughgoing examination of their opinions by many researchers such an attempt has not been made to examine a possibility of making their language-philosophical paradigms, namely, the theory of discourse analysis and that of universal/formal pragmatics, fit into one continuous operation. I argue that the language-philosophical grounds of those linguistic theories can come in conjunction with one another in the ordinary, historical and scientific process of speech acts in which meaning-understandings and sense-creating juxtapose, although they have distinct problematics in their own philosophy of language. I am of the opinion that Foucauldian theory of discourse analysis gives emphasis on the understanding of meaning through grasping the differences of statements according to the context of discourse formations, while the Habermasean theory of universal/formal pragmatics gives attention to the creating of senses directed toward to the intersubjective mutual understanding(Verständigung) among the participants. Their different philosophies of language including the same term ‘discourse’, that is, theory of discourse analysis and that of discourse ethics, lay the ultimate base for the irreconcilable divergence of their conceptions of modernity and the problems of modern society. Each operative unit in their philosophy of language, namely, statement(énoncé) and utterance (Äußerung), is related to the different stratum of language use. The understanding of the meaning of a statement is believed to be in relation with the context of rules dominated by discourse formations which pre-determine quasi-institutionally the meaning of words already used, while an utterance directs itself toward creating senses and recreating validity-claims inherent in the speech acts in use and communication. Thus, the discourse-formations and the communicative discourse-processes come in conjunction with one another in the field of discretely circulating and dimension-fluctuating language-uses through successive understanding of meaning and successful creating of inter- subjectively agreed senses. The activity of thinking with sensitivity capturing the differences in search for the mutual understanding with others, the different, turns out to be manifestations of capabilities of reason directing itself toward the total cognition and recognition of the differences which would result in the harmony and consensus amomg the affected. In this way, the post-structuralist approach to the discourse formations, watching out the differences and discontinuities, as well as the late critical- theoretic pragmatic turn looking after the mutual understanding can be integrated into such a socio-pragmatics of meaning-understanding and sense-creating in the process of ordinary or extra-ordinary process of living in a certain life-world of a historical period and a certain social context. With such a socio-pragmatic model for language use as comprehending and expressing the form of REASON of global dimension man can lay mental fundamentals for the integration of human-beings in the vision of overcoming every conflict caused by misunderstanding of others.
