현대매체미학과 안에스테틱(Anaestetics): 발터 벤야민의 보들레르 비평을 중심으로

이 글은 안에스테틱이라는 개념을 통해 현대미학론의 연장선에서 무감각의 문제를 조명해보고자 한다. 중점으로 다룰 사상가는 복제기술론을 바탕으로 현대예술론의 새로운 지평을 연 바 있는 발터 벤야민이다. 그의 후기 저작, 특히 파사주 프로젝트는 감각론적 관점에서 재구성이 가능하다. 다만 그 프로젝트의 미완적 성격 탓에 아이스테시스(Aisthesis)론의 정립이전에 안에스테틱을 직접 논하는 것이 다소 낯설게 느껴질 수 있다. 이에 인간지각의 변동은 특정 인지기관의 기능상실 혹은 감각마비를 동시에 수반한다는 마샬 맥루언의 주장을 본 고찰의 우회로로 삼을 것이다. 안에스테틱의 논의는 환경미학(Environmental Aesthetics)이라는 보다 체계적인 매체론의 이론화에 근거를 두고자한다. 따라서 환경미학의 정립을 위해 벤야민과 맥루언의 매체론 모두가 공유할 수 있는 기술철학적 전제 몇 가지를 제시할 것이다. 그 전제 아래 맥루언의 매체론에서 나타나는 안에스테틱 문제를 비판적으로 살펴볼 것이다. 맥루언의 매체론은 이른바 의족(Prothese)테제로 대변되는 기술중심주의에서 크게 벗어나지 못하며, 특히 지각변동의 역사적 국면에 대한 진술이 구체성을 결여하고 있다. 이와 달리 벤야민의 현대 지각 변동론은 역사적 논증으로 특징지어지며, 그 안에서 인간의 위기에 대한 문제의식이 첨예하게 드러난다. 벤야민의 현대성이론에 함축되어 있는 안에스테틱의 문제를 살펴보기 위해 보들레르 비평론에서 전개된 프로이트 수용이 집중적으로 분석될 것이다.
Abstract
This study was intended to examine the issue of anesthesia as an extension of theory of modern aesthetics based on the concept of anaestetics. The thinker to be focused on here is Walter Benjamin who opened up a new horizon for modern theory of art on the basis of the theory of reproductive technology. His latter work, particularly, the Passagen-Werk, can be reconstructed from the theoretical perspective of sensual perception. However, it may seem a little bit strange to discuss the anaestetics directly before establishing the theory of Aisthesis due to the incomplete nature of the project. Thus, the claim of Marshall McLuhan that the change in human perception involves the functional loss of perceptive organs or sensory paralysis simultaneously will be regarded as the detour for this consideration. The discussion on anaestetics is intended to be based on the theorization of systematic media theory, rather than environmental aesthetics. Thus, overall and some technical philosophical premises, which can be shared by the media theory of Benjamin and McLuhan, will be presented for establishment of environmental aesthetics. The issue of anaestetics, which emerge from the media theory of McLuhan under such premise, will be examined critically. The media theory of McLuhan did not break away significantly from the technology-centrism represented by the so-called Prothese, and particularly, the statement on the historical aspects of shift in perception shows a lack of specificity. By contrast, the modern theory of Benjamin is characterized by historic argumentation, in which the critical mind of human crisis is sharply revealed. To examine the issues of anaestetics implied in the modernity theory of Benjamin, the Freud Reception unfolded in the critique of Baudelaire will be intensively analyzed.
