Abstract

This article emphasizes that science and technology are not merely peripheral elements in The Human Condition but serve as the central framework that connects the beginning and end of the work. It aims to shed light again on the surrounding discourse while paying close attention to the Zeitgeist embedded in this text. It presents the Archimedean point and Earth alienation, which propelled scientific and technological progress, as pivotal in understanding The Human Condition. It draws attention to Arendt’s view that the dual separation between science and politics, as well as mathematics and language, could drive humanity toward the risk of annihilation. This paper argues that Arendt’s focus in this work is not on the essential characteristics of science and technology, but rather on the relationship among instrumental modern society driven by science and technology, the Cold War structure of that time, and the political realm that had lost control over these forces. The main target of criticism in The Human Condition is, above all, Cold War science. However, Arendt herself could not escape being situated within the discourse of Cold War-era science and technology. The analysis of the historical and international environment surrounding The Human Condition aims to rescue concepts of Vita Activa-labor, work, and action-from the one-sidedness of conceptual analysis conducted within the philosophical anthropology or life philosophy frame work, instead bringing them into the historical horizon. The most significant feature of Arendt’s work is its close engagement with the era. Thus, when The Human Condition is examined from the vivid historical horizon, the Zeitgeist, theoretical legacy, and even its limitations can be clearly revealed.
