자유주의는 개인의 자유를 최고의 가치로 삼는 정치 이념이지만, 홉스에서 기원하는 고전적 자유주의에서 오늘날 신자유주의에 이르기까지, 그리고 이에 대한 반발로 등장한 진보적 자유주의에 이르기까지, 지금까지 자유주의 전통에서 제시된 자유 개념은 경쟁 관계를 전제한 자기중심적 자유였다. 이 때문에 자유주의는 개인의 자유를 최고의 가치로 삼으면서도, 고전적 자유주의는 소수의 자유를 위해 대다수의 부자유를 초래하였고, 진보적 자유주의는 다수의 자유를 위해 소수의 자유를 제한하는 역설을 발생시켰다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 자유의 역설을 극복하기 위한 대안적 자유 개념으로 사회적 자유 개념을 제시한다. 이는 지금까지의 자유주의와 달리 사회성에 기초한 자유로서 협력적 자아실현을 의미한다는 점에서 나의 자유 실현이 타인의 자유 실현이 조건이 된다. 이런 점에서 사회적 자유는 자기중심적 자유의 역설을 극복할 수 있는 대안적 자유이다.
Abstract
Liberalism is a political ideology that values individual freedom. But from the classical liberalism originated in Hobbes to the neo-liberalism and the progressive liberalism that has emerged in opposition to the classical liberalism, the concept of freedom has been ego-centralized freedom that presupposes competition. However, while this liberalism made individual freedom the highest value, the classical liberalism led to the freedom of the few and the unfree stats of the many, and the progressive liberalism resulted in a paradox of limiting the freedom of the few for the freedom of the many. In this paper, the concept of social freedom is presented as an alternative concept of freedom to overcome this paradox of freedom. Unlike the liberalism to date, this is the freedom based on sociality, and does not generate the paradox of freedom, because according to this concept of freedom the realization of my freedom is condition to the realization of the freedom of others.
