Abstract

This article examines Hales’s concept of non-conscious cognition, which presents the relationship between human agency and technology as a distributed cognitive system, based on the organismal characteristics of having embodied knowledge of the environment. Contrary to those who equate cognition with consciousness, Hales describes cognition as embodied and focuses on technology as an embodied environment. Technological cognition is non-conscious cognition that is caused by the action of non-human agency. Unconscious cognition is a neural process that is not yet accessible to any aspect of consciousness, yet it plays an essential role in the workings of consciousness by interpreting information. The contemporary technological environment is a technological cognition, an unconscious cognition, that is embodied in contemporary human life, operates in ways that act on the environment, and is embodied in cognitive assemblages that connect technological actors to human actors. The purpose of this article is to explore the meaning of cognitive assemblages beyond the view that humans are the only important or relevant cognizants on the planet, and to present artificial intelligence as a cognitive assemblage at a critical juncture and to provide an ethical field for the black- boxed contemporary technological environment.
