Abstract

The present study explored the effect of family environment and resilience perceived by middle school students on their creativity and motivation. A total of 191 middle school students(96 gifted students, 95 non-gifted students) responded the Complex Family Questionnaire(Rathunde, 1989; Rathunde & Csikszentmihalyi, 1991), the Resilience Quotient(Reivich & Shatté, 2002), and creativity and motivation of SRBCSS-R(Renzulli et al., 2002). Results indicated that there were differences in creativity and motivation by student's giftedness. Second, gifted students perceived the higher harmony factor among family environment than non-gifted students, but non-gifted students perceived the higher sympathy factor than gifted students. Third, gifted students were higher in efficacy, challenge, emotional understanding, and analytical ability among resilience than non-gifted students. With respect to the effect of family environment and resilience on creativity and motivation, there were differences in the predictional way and degree of family environment and resilience on creativity and motivation by students’ giftedness. For these significant results, this study analyzed the possibile reasons and suggested the implications(or directions) in educational methods for the development of students’ potentials, expecially in creativity and motivation.
