어머니의 심리적 통제가 초등 영재자녀의 사회불안에 미치는 영향: 부적응적 완벽주의와 인정욕구를 매개로

이 연구에서는 어머니의 심리적 통제, 초등 영재자녀의 사회불안, 부적응적 완벽주의, 인정욕구간의 관계를 살펴보고, 어머니의 심리적 통제와 초등영재자녀의 심리적 부적응의 관계에서 자녀의 부적응적 완벽주의와 인정욕구가 매개하는지를 알아보았다. 이 연구의 표본은 수도권에 위치한 10개 초등학교 5, 6학년생 736명이며(영재: 352명, 일반: 384명), 이들에게 초등영재자녀가 지각한 어머니의 심리적 통제척도, 자녀의 사회불안 척도, 부적응적 완벽주의 척도, 인정욕구 척도를 실시하여 응답 자료를 분석하였다. 어머니의 심리적 통제, 자녀의 사회불안, 부적응적 완벽주의, 인정욕구의 일반적인 경향과 성별에 따른 차이를 알아보기 위해 기술통계분석과 t-검증을 실시하였으며, 매개효과 검증을 위해 구조모형 분석을 실시하였다. 주요 연구결과를 살펴보면, 영재집단과 일반집단에서 어머니의 심리적 통제와 인정욕구에서는 두 집단 간 유의한 차이가 없으나 부적응적 완벽주의의 부모기대와 실수염려 변인에서 영재집단이 일반집단보다 유의하게 높게 나타났으며, 사회 불안척도의 수행불안과 회피행동 및 사고에서 영재집단이 일반집단보다 불안감이 유의하게 낮게 나타났다. 또한, 영재집단과 일반집단 모두에서 부적응적 완벽주의에서 사회적 불안으로 가는 경로와 심리적 통제에서 사회적 불안으로 가는 경로가 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타났으며 어머니의 심리통제가 인정욕구를 매개하여 자녀의 사회불안에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 아동의 사회불안 수준을 낮추기 위해서 어머니의 심리 통제적 양육태도를 개선하는 동시에 자녀의 인정욕구 성향을 감소시키는 것이 중요함을 시사한다. 타인으로 부터의 인정욕구와 부모의 심리적 통제에 더 취약할 수 있는 영재학생을 위해 상담 및 부모교육에 대한 함의가 논의되었다.
Abstract
This study analyzes relationship among mother’s psychological control, gifted elementary school children’s social anxiety, maladaptive perfectionism and need for approval, focusing on the mediating effect of the maladaptive perfectionism and need for approval. The sample for this study includes a total of 736 fifth and sixth graders(gifted group: 352, non-gifted group: 384) enrolled in ten elementary schools located in metropolitan areas. The collected data were analyzed as follows. In order to capture the general tendencies and gender difference in mother’s psychological control, child’s social anxiety, maladaptive perfectionism, and need for approval, descriptive statistics analysis and t-test were conducted, while structural model analysis was used for verifying mediation effect. No significant difference was observed between gifted group and non-gifted group in their mother’s psychological control and need for approval. In maladaptive perfectionism, gifted group showed significantly higher parental expectation and concern over mistake than non-gifted group. In social anxiety, gifted group showed lower anxiety level in the aspects of performance anxiety and avoiding behavior/thinking than non-gifted group. In both groups the path from maladaptive perfectionism to social anxiety and the path from mother’s psychological control to social anxiety were not significant. Most interestingly, the path from mother’s psychological control to social anxiety were mediated by the need for approval. This research implies that in order to lower children’s social anxiety level, it is important not only to ameliorate mother’s psychologically controlling child-rearing attitude, but also to decrease children’s tendency for approval. The need for counseling and parental education is discussed for gifted students who can be more vulnerable to parental control and the desire for approval.
