Abstract
This study explored how middle school students perceived their 'gifted friends', 'creative friends', and 'academic high-achieving friends'. For this purpose, 196 students were asked to describe their perception of 'gifted friends', 'creative friends', and 'academic high-achieving friends' freely. Then the responses were classified, and another 194 middle school students were asked to indicate how similar the statements with their perception of talented friends. Factor analysis revealed that middle school students perceived 'creativity', 'excellence in a specific domain', 'excellence learning ability', 'not low sociability', 'sociability', 'innate intellectual ability', and 'achievement motivation' as characteristics of 'gifted friends'. Their perceived characteristics of 'creative friends' were 'artistic talent', 'sociality/humor sense', 'openness' and 'excellent cognitive skills and learning ability'. Lastly, perceived characteristics of 'academic high-achieving friends' were 'competitive spirit/good relationship with teachers', 'concentration and memorizing', 'need for academic achievement', 'having effective learning strategies', 'leadership/creativity', 'not low sociability', and 'affiliations'. The results of this study showed that adolescents did not negatively perceive the sociality of the talented. The results of the study also revealed that the adolescents' perception of the talented was partly consistent with previous research results. Based on the results of the research, we discussed the role of peer in talent development and the possibility of using the peer-nominated method in talent identification.
