Abstract
This study investigated how gifted students’ understanding of the concept of eco-systems were affected by the NetLogo simulation-based program. Twenty gifted elementary students at the University-affiliated Science Gifted Education Center participated in online simulation lessons using NetLogo Models’ Library. The main data source of this study was a questionnaire asking the students to express their understanding of interactions between agents in the given NetLogo eco-system simulation by System Dynamic Modeler (SDM). The result showed that after the lessons, the students’ understanding of the interactions between agents was characterized as follows. First, the number of individual agents increases and decreases at a certain width. Second, the ecosystem equilibrium of an ecosystem with a larger number of species lasts longer. Third, when a change occurs in the population of the lower food chain, the corresponding change also occurs in the population indirectly connected to that population. Fourth, even minor adjustments can change the overall appearance of an ecosystem over time. This study is meaningful in that NetLogo simulation activities can help elementary students improve their understanding of the basic principles of the ecosystem, such as predator-prey-interaction and ecosystem equilibrium.
