Abstract
Kim Hong-il spent 40 years of his young and middle-aged life in China (30 years in exile and 10 years as an ambassador). In an exceptional case for a foreigner, he rose to the rank of lieutenant general in the Chinese army. This article investigates the influence of China on Kim Hong-il's establishment as a military expert. To this end, it analyzed the experience and ideology he accumulated while serving as a high- ranking officer in he Chinese military. This article focused on the following three aspects. First, his experience at the Lushan Summer Training Corps in 1937. This training corps was established by Chiang Kai-shek to unify the ideology of military officers and suppress the Communist Party, and moral/spiritual education was heavily emphasized. Through the training, Kim Hong-il was influenced by Chiang Kai-shek’s dignified demeanor, and by concurrently serving as the Deputy Chief of the Finance Department of the corps, he gained practical experience in wartime military accounting. This experience influenced him to make spiritual instruction the core of the curriculum when he became the Commandant of the Korea Military Academy upon his return home. Second, his background as a graduate of the 6th Special Class of the Chinese Army War College, an institution for training high-level staff officers. The Army War College had extremely strict admission qualifications, and Kim Hong-il intensively studied advanced military subjects there for two years, including tactics for different branches, divisions, and corps, joint Army, Navy, and Air Force operations, and strategy, thereby deepening his knowledge and capabilities as a military expert. Third, the military philosophy book, A General Outline of National Defense, which he authored after his return home. This work was written out of a sense of responsibility to convey knowledge of modern warfare and national defense to his compatriots facing the threat of war, and it is the culmination of his practical combat and educational experiences in China. A General Outline of National Defense presents the preparation for war during peacetime, total war that integrates the nation's overall capacity—including political, economic, and military power—and the synthesis of 'defense-minded citizens' with sound ideology and technical capabilities as the core of national defense. The book shows similarities in content and structure to Chinese military texts, namely The Status of Military Equipment of Various Nations and A New Theory of National Defense, and is evaluated as a comprehensive proposal that presented a blueprint for national defense construction suited to the circumstances of Korea at the time.
