Abstract
The purpose this study was to investigate the effects of upper extremity exercise intervention on immune functions and cortisol in breast cancer patients after mastectomy. Nonequivalent control-group pretest-posttest design was used. Research participants were patients with breast cancer who got a mastectomy in university hospitals (17 for experimental group, 16 for control group). Immune functions test (IL-6, TNF-α) and cortisol tests were performed in pre-test and post-test. The experimental group received an upper extremity exercise program, three times a week for 7 weeks. A paired-sample t-test and an independent-sample t-test were conducted with the SPSS Ver. 27.0 to investigate effects of the intervention. As a results, there were significant differences of changes between pre-test and post-test in IL-6, TNF-α, and cortisol in only experimental group. In conclusion, the upper extremity exercise program has been showed as an effective intervention to improve immune functions and decrrase cortisol in breast cancer patients after mastectomy. Therefore, it is necessary to apply the intervention to patients after mastectomy in clinics since many patients have suffered from decrease of immune functions and increase of cortisol.
