Abstract

This study which aims to present the concept of contemporary dance, has been progressed in the order of exploring the expansion of media as a place for pro- gressing or keeping dance and flexible form in the relationship between dance and society, and the results of this study are as follows. Dance that finds the value through social participation, occurs in various places engaged in the medium of body expressiveness, rather than the form as a com- pleted/preserved output. Contemporary dance is created in a form or place forming meanings, rather than a finished product waiting for contemplation which is the last point of cre- ative process, and such dance learns empathy, consideration, and more creativity through the process of self-directedly making meanings according to participatory interactions, and sharing them with the participated community. Contrary to the movement as an expression of individuals’ transient and in- dividual emotions, the dance that has meanings as a form is inherited and lasted with the accessibility as a function to keep relationship with community or society. Even though the change of social system is related to the accessibility, the dance in the system achieves its function in society as a form which is the process of forming meanings. In the connection of dance and society, the applied learnings like politics, economy, administration, and social welfare, and the social values-oriented ethi- cal/moral views such as history, culture, and philosophy, are presented through the media, and the value of dance is formed through social participation. Dance that is created as the flexible form in the complexly-connected profes- sional field such as media archeologist, anthropologist, archivist(recorder), folk- lorist, honorary ambassador, educator, and planner in the archive field of technical media including digital media, has a characteristic in which the meanings and value of dance are realized in the process.
