Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the realization of the transitivity system in the presidential inaugural address, and what it reveals about the ideational characteristics of the presidential inaugural address. For this purpose, predicates and subjects appearing in each clauses of the presidential inaugural address text from the first to the 20s were found and analyzed according to the transitivity system theory of systematic functional linguistics. As a result of transitivity analysis, it was possible to confirm the use aspect of the transitivity in the presidential inaugural address and the meaning and function revealed through such use aspect. Taking the transformative process of the material process, which occupies the highest frequency of use in the presidential inaugural address as an example, the transformative process showed different meanings and functions depending on the type of central participant (subject) in the process (predicate). the transformative process showed different meanings and functions depending on the type of central participant (subject) in the process (predicate). When the central participant of the transformative process is ‘speaker’, it mainly expresses the speaker’s determination as a president or presents national goals. In the case of ‘listener’, it expresses the achievements of the listener or what the listener wants the speaker to do in the speaker’s plan, and in the case of ‘speaker & listener’, it represents that the speaker and the listener have experienced the same experience, or the national goal that the speaker and the listener should achieve together. In the case of ‘Other’, it mainly refers to the domestic and international situation of Korea or expresses a positive outlook. These findings will help us understand the linguistic characteristics of the genre of presidential inaugural address, in particular the use of lexical elements such as process (predicate) and central participant (subject). And it will be significant in that it provides the meaning and function of the transitivity in the genre of presidential inaugural address. Furthermore, it will be helpful in terms of education in that it can be used as teaching and learning content for expression ability and comprehension ability.
