Abstract

This article takes Li Juan’s nonfictional prose collection My Altay and its eponymous television adaptation as the primary texts, exploring the current state and feasibility of adapting Chinese nonfictional prose into visual media from two key dimensions: “form”(the narrative background provided by the original work) and “spirit” (the authorial consciousness embedded within the text). As a representative figure in Chinese nonfictional literature, Li Juan's works—particularly My Altay—highlight a distinctive blend of individual experience and regional narration. The success of the television adaptation of My Altay can be attributed not only to its faithful reproduction of the original's rich life details and authentic contextual settings, but also to the transmission of values such as anti-involution and low material desire, which counter the anxieties of modernity. In this sense, the adaptation effectively continues both the “form” and “spirit” of the source material. Through a dual analysis of text and visual media, this paper argues that in the current practice of adapting nonfictional prose into visual formats, works marked by strong regional cultural identity and unique local aesthetics possess significant advantages. Nonetheless, regardless of subject matter, only when the depicted way of life resonates emotionally with the audience, and when the authorial consciousness aligns deeply with contemporary viewers’ spiritual needs, can the adaptation achieve both effective dissemination and artistic significance.
