나는 이 글에서 케인의 양립불가론, 즉 비결정론이 성립하지 않음을 지적하고, 인간에 관해서도 결정론을 부정할 수 없음을 논증할 것이다. 그리고 나는 자유가 단지 느껴지는 것, 경험되는 것이라는 점을 주장할 것이다. 그러고 나서, 단지 느껴지는 자유를 자유로서 인정하여 결정론과 양립시키려고 하는 데넷과 매길의 시도를 책임의 문제와 결부해 비판하고, 기존의 책임개념에 얽매여 자유개념을 구하려고 애쓰기보다 책임개념을 바꿀 것을 제안할 것이다. 양립가능론적 결정론자인 데넷과 매길의 자유개념에 대한 나의 비판이 옳을 경우, 남은 길은 양립불가능론적 결정론, 즉 강한 결정론이 될 것이다.
Abstract
In this paper, firstly, I show that Kane’s incompatibilism as a kind of indeterminism cannot be valid, and that determinism cannot be denied even on the issue of person. I then argue that freedom is nothing but what is felt or experienced by us. Secondly, I criticize Dennet’s and Magill’s attempts to make freedom and determinism compatible. Finally, I suggest that we should try to have an alternative conception of responsibility instead of trying to save the idea of freedom by adhering to the traditional conception of responsibility. If my critique of Dennet’s and Magill’s attempts, the only remaining option is incompatibilist determinism, which is a hard determinism.
