Abstract
In “Religion within the Limits of Reason,” Kant presents a strong claim that all humans are evil, only supported by poor empirical evidence. Strangely, he hints at the potential existence of a alternative argument for radical evil, prompting many sympathetic interpreters to endeavor in unveiling this hidden perspective. Kant’s indication seems to place this alternative argument in Section 2, Part 1 of the book, a detail overlooked by most interpretations. To suggest new hidden argument of radical evil correspond to Kant’s provisos, this paper first examines Kant’s definition of the radical evil thesis and its weak ground. Following this, a meticulous scrutiny of Kant’s remarks on the hidden argument reveals four key clues (Section 2). Subsequently, a comprehensive review of interpretations that overlook Kant's specified section is conducted, along with a consideration of a few exceptions. It is affirmed that none of the interpretations align with all four provisions (Section 3). Finally, I delve into the original text where Kant briefly discusses evil from the propensity of impurity. This conception of evil, together with Kant’s conception of the highest maxims, can present hidden arguments that satisfy all four conditions (Section 4).
