Abstract

Due to the rapidly increasing elderly population in Korea, the occurrence of acute aphasia among adults and the elderly due to COVID-19, and the increasing demand for remote-based speech rehabilitation services, there is a need for a multidisciplinary treatment plan in Korea. The major databases were searched for relevant articles using the keywords Aphasia. Thirteen articles were selected for review and were identified that had been published in KCI accredited (candidate) journals in the last 10 years. Major results were as follows. First, Studies using a pre-post design accounted for 69%. Second, The proportion of male participants in the study was high, and many were in their 50s and 60s. In the aphasia type, the nonfluency type was more common, and the ratio of severe to moderate was high in severity. Third, compared to the frequent injury-based treatment approaches before 2017, computer-based interventions and cognitive therapy approaches have been frequently conducted since then. Fourth, the analysis of treatment effect was most frequently performed by statistical verification method. Clinical studies on the treatment of aphasia in Korean-speaking adults are very limited. Quantitative and qualitative development through a convergence treatment approach is required to prepare for the rapid increase of the elderly population in the future.
