Understanding Brazil’s Foreign Policy Under Bolsonaro Through a Text-mining Analysis

This study aims to understand the main characteristics and diplomatic stance of Brazilian foreign policy under Bolsonaro. To this end, 70 Brazilian diplomatic documents released during Bolsonaro’s tenure were analyzed using text-mining techniques such as keyword analysis and semantic network analysis. As a result, Bolsonaro’s foreign policy showed its unique pro-Western and ideology-oriented traits. In addition, issues such as climate change skepticism and Amazon development, which caused social and international controversy during Bolsonaro’s tenure, were also mainly addressed. This study is methodologically significant in that it employed text-mining techniques in foreign policy research, but using a mixed research method that utilizes both qualitative and quantitative research methods is needed to derive more contextualized explanations in the future.
