Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the sources and reasons of meaning in life reported by Korean college students with high/flourishing versus low/languishing levels of mental well-being. The flourishing group (n=138) and the languishing group (n=222) were selected from a nationwide sample of 955 college students. Qualitative content analyses were conducted on reponses to online open-ended questions on what (sources) and why (reasons) of meaning in life. Content categorization and frequency analysis showed that similar categories of meaning sources (relationships, academic study, economic success, etc.) emerged from both groups but some sources and reasons revealed group differences. Flourishers mentioned sharing of positive affect and mutuality whereas languishers reported reception of support and escape from hardship. Findings imply the necessity of understanding motives underlying meaning in life as well as various meaning sources in order to promote college students’ mental well-being. Finally, in-depth research on personal experiences of meaning in life is suggested.
