Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of the presence of meaning (PM) in life on the association between search for meaning (SM) and psychological wellbeing (PW), and analyze a moderated mediation model of social interest (SI) by testing if SI moderates such a mediating effect of PM among college students. Participants were 365 male and female students attending the universities located within B metropolitan city. The data from the self-report measures of SM, PM, PW and SI were analyzed and the results are as follows: First, significant positive correlations were found among SM, PM, PW, and SI. Second, PM partially mediated the relationship between SM and PW. Third, the moderating effect of SI on the relationship between SM and PM was significant as SM had a stronger relationship with PM when the level of SI was higher. Finally, the mediating effect of PM on the relationship between SM and PW was found to be moderated by SI, which supports the validity of the proposed moderated mediation model of SI. Our findings implicate the potential facilitative role that SI plays in finding the meaning in life and experiencing psychological wellbeing when college students strive to search for meaning in life. Based on the results, the significance and limitations of our study and suggestions were discussed.
