Abstract
This paper aims to investigate the ambiguity of forging women’s identities and explores the ideal for female space in A Lie of the Mind. It found and analyzed the world of excluded women through Shepard’s work history. Sam Shepard’s A Lie of the Mind dramatizes the inter-relationships of the destroyed American family. Shepard has dealt with American male-dominated society and women’s broken identities in his plays. The men characters of Jake, Mike, and Baylor in this play are violent, rigid, and irresponsible to support their families. And the women characters in this play try to survive in the violent and heartless male world. Shepard visualizes women’s ambiguous identities through the conflicts between women and men in this play. Actually, men’s characters’ repetitious violence represents their fears as the victims of the empty mythos of the American dream. Four women characters in this play become active and independent of their husbands or fathers towards the end of this play. Throughout this play, Shepard shows his hope for the vision of redemption through forgiveness and love.
