Abstract

This paper aims to focus on storytelling in cyberspace which embodies hybrid identity and women’s pleasure in Jeanette Winterson’s The PowerBook and clarify that variable identity and contingency of sexuality are literary representation method that challenges normative gender and heterosexuality antagonistic to women. Based on the discourse on the alliance between technology and women in cyberfeminism, this study illuminates that Winterson’s novel explores not just cyberspace as an expansion of reality, but also the hybrid identity and contingency of sexuality on the basis of Judith Butler’s gender performativity. This paper explores The PowerBook is a cyber-storytelling to challenge the gender binary and normative heterosexuality antagonistic to women, which ultimately changes readers’ perception of the world. This study also reveals the limitations inherent in the optimism of women's alliance with technology, which raises the need for a follow-up study to elevate the awareness of the issue of discrimination against women in cyberspace facing our society.
