Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find the direction of the unification movement with the local community in the face of the crisis of the unification movement due to rapid changes in the security environment at home and abroad, such as the Russo-Woo War and North Korea’s mid- and long-range missile launches. As for the research method, reference was made to data on the Unification Movement published by the Ministry of Unification and the Unification Research Institute, media press releases, and prior studies on major academic search sites. The contents of the study are to make policy suggestions on the way for the unification movement by examining the role of the local community through the recent situation around the Korean Peninsula and the history of the unification movement. As a conclusion and suggestion, first, it was revealed that the sudden change in the security environment at home and abroad caused a crisis in the unification movement. Second, as the subject of the unification movement, it was revealed that it was necessary to change from a government-led unification policy to a unification policy with the local community. Third, the problems of the unification movement and the future direction of the unification movement were presented through a review of the history of the unification movement of previous administrations. Fourth, it was revealed that a paradigm change is necessary through the analysis of the reality of the unification movement that has been promoted in the local community. This study is meaningful in that it was conducted amid insufficient research on the unification movement with the local community.
