Abstract

This study addresses severe machining deformation and vibration issues in slender, lightweight titanium shoulder prosthetic stems, arising from their low stiffness. To resolve this, a novel jig mechanism was developed and its performance evaluated through Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and prototype testing. Structural analysis revealed the proposed jig effectively controlled stem deformation and stress across varying fixing positions and feed rates, demonstrating machining stability. Notably, stability was confirmed for fixing positions up to 60mm. Vibration analysis showed the jig system's high natural frequency, significantly exceeding tool rotation frequency, ensuring low resonance risk. Prototype fabrication confirmed feasibility, with experimental data validating FEA results with an average error rate of approximately 10%. This research significantly contributes to enhancing the machining precision and quality of lightweight shoulder prosthetic stems, providing safer and more effective prostheses for patients.
