Abstract

This research has main purpose that to examine the character of the Chilseong-gut of Hwanghae-do province of Korea and the special gut which called ‘the hitting of sacred water’ to related with water. In many Korean guts, the Gut has cleaning ritual to use water. For examples, the Cheonsu-chigi of the Chilseong -gut of Hwanghae-do province of Korea, the Saedarim of the Yeongdeung-je ritual of Chilmeoridang (Jeju island), and the Ssitgim-gut of Jindo island for the dead. I will discuss three points in this paper. In the Chilseong-gut of Hwanghae-do province of Korea, first why do many theatrics and the divinities show water? Second, which relation do they have between the Big Dipper and themselves? Finally, I want to explain the meaning of the hitting (spraying) of sacred water ritual. The Big Dipper51) is place where the <Cheonil> and <Taeyil>52) are located as the source of sacred water. In Korean, this sacred water calls the Cheonsu, it means the heaven’s water. As a result, in the Chilseong-gut, the Cheongsu-chigi is the ceremony to wash away all bad lucks and restore the human nature; the good [Seon 善], pure [Cheong 淸], and humanity [Hu 厚]53). This conclusion is the gut is not simple a superstition, but is also an important idea in the human history. Moreover, the purity ritual of the Cheonsu-chigi does not differ from other religions. So this research emphasizes to solve the equation that the Korean gut is a superstition and to reveal it.
