Abstract

This study examines how the consciousness and emotions of North Korean residents are reflected in the songs they adapt from state-composed music. It explores how North Korean social realities are expressed through the lyrics of these adapted songs and how the emotions of the people are articulated in this process. North Korean songs, while varying in theme, genre, and style depending on the era and generation, share common characteristics. Adapted songs often incorporate real-life characters into the lyrics, objectifying them, turning them into caricatures, and confronting tragic realities head-on. Through the use of everyday language, these adaptations transform sorrowful truths into comedy. The lyrics also reveal the needs and desires of North Korean residents, reflecting their lives in raw and unfiltered terms. By rewriting state-created songs, North Korean residents express a desire for realistic and relatable content, in stark contrast to the unusual and idealized themes found in the original songs crafted by the state. The deepening of the North Korean authorities' strong control mechanism is hindering the mobilization mechanism enough to trigger collective action among the North Korean people, but the North Korean people's songs, which satirize reality and overthrow norms, are of a closed society at a stage before manifesting into collective action. It is clear that this is creative resistance.
