Abstract

This study analyzes how Korean calligraphy lost its original identity after being subsumed under the Western concept of “fine arts” during the modern era. The modern notion of art did not exist in East Asia before the eighteenth century; it entered the region through Japan’s Meiji adoption of Western aesthetics and was imposed on colonial Korea. Consequently, calligraphy—traditionally a literary, philosophical, and spiritual art—was reduced to a subordinate visual-art category, a distortion that continued through the U.S. Military Government and remains embedded in contemporary cultural and educational policy. The Culture and Arts Promotion Act still does not recognize calligraphy as an independent genre, despite precedents such as traditional music, photography, architecture, and design being institutionally separated from fine arts. By tracing the formation of Japan’s modern art system, its colonial transplantation, and its long-term influence, this study shows that treating calligraphy merely as painting is an unfounded category error. It argues that calligraphy must be redefined as an autonomous art form and that systemic reform is necessary to restore its authentic status within Korean cultural policy.
