Abstract
With the rapid adoption of Text-to-Image AI in UI design, there is a growing need for systematic research on its educational impact and effective integration into design education. This study presents a novel theoretical framework that integrates Kaptelinin and Nardi's mediated action perspective with activity theory to analyze the technology affordances of Text-to-Image AI tools in UI design education. Through a 15-week qualitative study involving 21 undergraduate design students, we identified and analyzed three key types of affordances and their interactions: instrumental affordances (manipulation and effect), learning affordances (rule-based, community-based, and role-based), and mediating affordances (maintenance and aggregation). The findings revealed that 71% of students struggled with translating design intentions into prompts, 69% acquired core techniques through peer learning, and 82% invested significant time in workflow configuration. These findings suggest the need for prompt engineering education specialized for UI design contexts, formal integration of peer learning mechanisms, and implementation of new assessment methods. This study contributes to both theoretical understanding and practical guidelines for creating effective and sustainable learning environments in AI-augmented design education.
