Abstract
Chinese cartoon magazines flourished during the 1930s. Young, avant-garde artistic groups produced numerous images of their beloved ‘Modern Girl’ in such magazines as Shanghai Sketch (Shanghai Manhua) and Modern Sketch (Shidai Manhua), while artists on the political left gathered around the magazine Manhua Shenghuo (Sketches of Life). When the Sino-Japanese War escalated, illustrators collaborated with war propaganda comic teams, publishing magazines such as Jiuwang Manhua (Sketches for National Salvation) and Kangzhan Manhua (War Resistance Sketches). The figure of Modern Girl was replaced by brutal images of female victims — the maimed, the raped, the displaced — and the figures of military medics and soldiers. Male artists also depicted Japanese women in sympathetic terms: as family left behind by Japanese soldiers. Thus, they even expressed a sort of antiwar sentiment. In contrast to these male-authored images of female victimization, Liang Baibo — one of a very few female artists within a male-dominated art circle — steered away from the theme of female victimization in her work at that time. This paper, by focusing on images of Chinese and Japanese women created by Chinese male and female artists, examines the intersections between gender and nationhood during the second Sino-Japanese War.
