Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop two valid and reliable instruments to assess elementary and secondary school students' abilities of scientific hypothesis generation. Three samples were selected for development of instruments. For the first pilot test, 64 fourth, 64 eighth, and 59 eleventh grade students were selected. For the second pilot test, 32 fourth grade, 42 eighth grade, and 46 eleventh grade students were selected. For the final test, 200 fourth grade, 200 eighth grade, and 200 eleventh grade students were selected from two elementary, middle, and high schools in Korea. These instruments were developed by R & D process. The result of this study showed that the content validities of the assessment framework and the items, the inter-scorer reliabilities of the scoring check lists, the construct validity, the equivalence of two instruments, and the internal consistency were found to be satisfactory. In the group comparisons, the difference of grades was statistically significant, genders was statistically insignificant, and regions was statistically insignificant. Therefore, it can be concluded that the two instruments are valid, reliable, and useful to assess the abilities of scientific hypothesis generation.
