Abstract
Some of the metal crafts made at Baekje workshop were excavated from ancient tombs in Kyushu, Japan. The artifacts from Etahunayama tomb and Daibo tomb in Kumamoto Prefecture are examples. Both of the tombs were built during Baekje Woongjin era. As both of them had been disturbed prior to the archaeological investigation, it is difficult to know burial context. But it is noteworthy that metal crafts of Baekje were buried in the tombs of Kyushu region in the late 5th and early 6th centuries. A gilt–bronze crown, gold earrings, gilt–bronze shoes, and an ornamental sword excavated from Etahunayama tomb are shared style characteristics with the relics of Baekje in the late 5th and early 6th centuries. Judging from the pattern and manufacturing techniques, it is more likely that they were made at Baekje central workshop than imitated in Japan. The gilt–bronze crown and ornamental sword seem to have been made relatively earlier than the gilt–bronze shoes and gold earrings. The gold earrings were made later than gilt–bronze shoes. The gold earrings excavated from Daibo tomb are believed to have been made in the late 5th century, partly overlapping with the excavated items of Etahunayama tomb. Similar earrings were found from Ipjeom–ri tombs in Iksan and Jeongchon tomb in Naju. The discovery of such Baekje objects in Kyushu may have been attributed to the close relationship between Baekje and Japan. The Japanese king may have obtained these objects and given them to the person buried in Etahunayama tomb, but if you look at the distribution of metal crafts from all the Japanese islands, it is more likely that the heads of the Kyushu region obtained them separately from Baekje.
