Abstract
The 1756 household register (戶籍大帳) of Gokseong-hyeon, Jeolla-do, is a single-volume document that preserves records for only three of the eight administrative districts (面) within Gokseong-hyeon. It serves as one of the very few extant sources for examining the household registers of Jeolla-do during the late Joseon period. Although this document was previously studied and analyzed in 1975, earlier research faced limitations due to regional misunderstandings, computational errors, and a restricted scope of textual analysis. This study digitizes and reanalyzes the Gokseong-hyeon household register. Located near Namwon, Gokseong-hyeon was a small town evaluated unfavorably by the central administration compared to other towns of similar scale in Jeolla-do. Analysis reveals that Gokseong-hyeon exhibited unique demographic characteristics, maintaining a consistent population count through the 19th century compared to Daegu, Ulsan, and Danseong-hyeon in the Yeongnam region. Notably, while many counties in the 19th century displayed female-dominant sex ratios, Gokseong-hyeon demonstrated a male-dominant sex ratio. The population data and textual records within the Gokseong-hyeon household register suggest that despite its socioeconomic limitations as a small town, the region displayed administrative flexibility in population management, particularly in its relationship with labor allocation and taxation. A comparison between the township (邑治) and its surrounding villages (外村) reveals significant fluctuations in the township population, likely influenced by adjustments to sex ratios based on administrative needs. Furthermore, a comparative analysis with towns in the Yeongnam region shows that Gokseong-hyeon shared the closest similarities with Danseong-hyeon in terms of demographic trends and administrative practices. Despite minor differences, the findings highlight the uniformity and consistency of population management systems across regions during the late Joseon period. These results underscore the standardized and integrated nature of household registration and census practices of the era.
