『三國遺事』 영어번역본의 문제점 분석 - 紀異 篇을 중심으로-

한국고대사 연구에서 중요사료로 평가받는 『삼국유사(三國遺事)』는 다양한 분야에서의 학문적 관심을 반영하듯 다른 고대사 사료와 비교하여 이른 시기에 여러 외국어로 번역되었다. 다양한 언어의 번역본 가운데 영어번역본은 그 활용도가 가장 높은 자료라 할 수 있으나 출판 직후부터 번역본의 문제와 학술적인 번역의 필요성이 제기되어왔다. 이에 본고에서는 완역된 영어번역본 2종을 「기이(紀異)」편(篇)을 중심으로 사서로서의 가치 및 정확성 전달과 관련된 번역상의 문제점을 분석하였다. 먼저 번역본들은 저본이 되는 『삼국유사』 판본과 인본에 대한 구체적 언급이 없었고 교감이 제대로 이루어지지 않아 내용을 오역하고 조목 간 유기적 관계가 있는 사료의 특성을 잘 나타내지 못하였다. 또한 칭호나 인명, 관직명 등의 단어와 본문 내 문장이 원문을 정확하게 옮기지 못한 사례가 있었다. 이 밖에도 로마자 표기법의 원칙에 어긋나거나 일관성 없는 표기가 있었고 장소나 도량형과 같은 고유용어의 번역에서도 통일된 표기가 없거나 일정한 근거 없이 서양의 단위로 환산하여 정확성에 문제가 있었다. 인용문헌명의 번역에 있어서도 사료의 성격을 고려한 번역이 이뤄지지 못했다. 향후 학술적으로 활용할 수 있는 수준 높은 영어번역본 작업을 위해서는 『삼국유사』 원문과 여러 분야에서의 연구 성과를 철저히 검토하고 개인 보다는 다양한 학문적, 언어적 배경을 가진 전문가들이 함께 참여하는 것이 바람직하다.

Abstract

Samguk Yusa, also known as Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms, has been acclaimed as one of the significant historical records by Korean ancient history researchers and this scholarly attention has been reflected in its numerous translations in various languages that were complete comparatively earlier than other ancient historical sources. However, the English versions of Samguk Yusa, considered the most utilized materials among others, revealed problems and brought up the need to translate the original text in a more scholarly manner, after their publication. In this respect, this paper analyzed two complete translations of Samguk Yusa, mainly on “Gii-pyeon” to identify their value as historical records and translation challenges pertaining to accuracy. First, the afore-said two translations of Samguk Yusa did not fully mention details of the bottom books, i.e. printed book and woodblock-printed book and their failure to communicate with the original text led to mistranslation. Futhermore these translations failed to fully show the characteristics of historical records, including organic relations among sections. In some other cases, words, such as title, personal name and public office name, and sentences were not accurately translated in the two translations. In terms of Romanization, some failed to follow the principles or to maintain coherence under these principles. Also, the translated proper nouns (e.g. weights and measures) had a problem since coherent orthography did not exist or all figures were calculated by western units without grounds. Reference translation did not consider the nature of historical records. In order to create a sophisticated English version of Samguk Yusa to be utilized in a scholarly manner, it is recommendable to thoroughly review its original text and various related research, and to participate in projects together with various experts with a scholarly and language background, not individuals.
