Abstract
In the context of the recent interest in non-human elements of care, this study explores why and how spirits, a non-human entity, have emerged as a force to be reckoned with in questions about the forces that have driven and sustained caregiving during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study focuses on dialogues with four female care workers. It traces and describes the affective flows that emerge through human encounters with spirits that are linked to contaminants, such as feces, urine, and pus, using Sarah Ahmed's concept of sticky affect, Karen Barad's performative realism, and Judith Butler's gendered performativity as analytical frameworks. In doing so, it presents an affective world of care that is newly constituted and created through encounters with spirits that emerge in response to and in coordination with changes in social, cultural, and economic conditions. Thus, it depicts various scenes where care workers, who are deeply embedded in the patriarchal and capitalist order and seem to be unable to escape it, are breaking out using existing language, ideology, values, and institutions. Accordingly, it emphasizes that the spirit is not an object to be eradicated or a meaningless immateriality that disappears quickly but a key factor in creating everyday care through an affective meshwork between humans and spirits. Furthermore, it offers a new anthropological imagination and practices for the study of care from a hauntological perspective.
