본 연구는 오스트리아 극작가 하인리히 레겔의 발레 대본 "한국의 신부"에 대한 심층적 분석을 제공한다. 레겔이 비엔나 발레의 민족무용과 제1차 청일전쟁이라는 시대적 배경을 바탕으로 작품을 창작한 과정을 살펴본다. 특히, 시카고 만국박람회 기념 발레 <컬럼비아>(1893)와 <인형요정>(1888)에서의 경험이 "한국의 신부" 창작에 미친 영향을 분석하며, 레겔의 대본과 요제프 바이어의 육필총보 간 차이점, 에른스트 폰 헤세-바르텍의 여행기와의 연계성, 그리고 새로운 여성상의 제시 등을 다룬다. 이 연구는 레겔의 발레계 내 위치 확립과 작품이 당시 사회문화적 맥락에서 갖는 의미를 명확히 하며, 이는 향후 발레 <한국의 신부>(1897) 대한 이해를 깊게 하는 데 이바지할 것이다.
Abstract
This study provides a detailed analysis of the ballet libretto Die Braut von Korea by the Austrian dramatist Heinrich Regel. It examines the process by which Regel created the work, drawing on the ethnic dances of the Viennese ballet and the context of the First Sino-Japanese War (1894/95). In particular, it analyzes the influence of his experiences with the Chicago World's Fair ballets Columbia (1893) and Die Puppenfee (1888) on the creation of Die Braut von Korea, including the differences between Regel's libretto and Josef Bayer's handwritten notes, the connection to Ernst von Hesse-Wartegg's travelogues, and the presentation of a new female character. This study establishes Regel's place in the ballet world and clarifies the work's meaning in the cultural and social context of its time, which will contribute to a deeper understanding of the ballet Die Braut von Korea(1897) in the future.
