Abstract

The “Inscriptional Records of the Shang Dynasty” refer to the inscriptional texts on bronze artifacts from the period prior to the Western Zhou dynasty. These inscriptions, characterized as “narrative inscriptions,” are predominantly composed in the form of “verb-predicate sentences.” Within the corpus of Shang inscriptions, predicate forms include verbs such as ‘賓(儐)’, ‘登’, ‘得’, ‘典’, ‘箙’, ‘工(貢)’, ‘工冊’, ‘木’, ‘司(祠)’, ‘申(伸)冊’, ‘示’, ‘獻’, ‘劦(協)冊’, ‘易(賜)’, ‘以’, ‘寧(貯)’, as well as forms where the verb by the caster is omitted, such as ‘乍(作)’ and ‘用作’. For instance, phrases such as ‘处(咎)山’ in the ‘灸卣’ (05396) and ‘乍(作)冊友史’ in the ‘寢農鼎’ (02710) illustrate the concept of ‘佑人’, referring to individuals who played an auxiliary role, specifically acting on behalf of the king to deliver rewards to recipients of royal gifts. Although the term ‘佑人’ appears frequently in Western Zhou inscriptions, it has yet to be documented in fully developed forms within Shang narrative inscriptions. This suggests that Shang narrative inscriptions represent an early stage in the evolution of inscriptional forms. By contrast, the ‘頌鼎’ (02827~02829) illustrates the procedural details of conferral ceremonies during the Western Zhou period and provides a comprehensive example of the mature form of narrative inscriptions, making it an invaluable resource for understanding these texts.
