Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the auction catalogs of Yamanaka & Co. to examine the types and characteristics of Korean paintings introduced to the United States through Yamanaka & Co. Yamanaka & Co. is a Japanese trading company that entered the United States in 1894 and established multiple branches across Europe and America, distributing tens of thousands of Asian cultural artifacts. From 1896 to 1944, Yamanaka & Company consistently included Korean artworks among the items it sold in the United States. Therefore, this study focused on the Korean artworks that were sold through the Yamanaka & Co. at that time. In particular, by targeting only Korean painting works that have not been studied due to the small number of current works, we investigated what kind of Korean painting works the Yamanaka & Co. sold and its characteristics. Prior to this, first this paper explores how Yamanaka & Co. acquired Korean art. The company not only participated in domestic auctions but also formed purchasing connections based on ethnic affinity with Japanese dealers in Joseon who dominated the antique trade and auction markets at the time. This enabled them to collect and export numerous Korean artworks. In this process, it was confirmed that there was also an effortt within Korea to promote Korean art to the world through the Yamanaka & Co. Korean paintings introduced in the United States through the Yamanaka & Co. were primarily Buddhist paintings, followed by bird-and-flower paintings and portraits. They were typically large and adorned with vibrant colors. Through this, It can be assumed that Korean paintings exported through Yamanaka & Co. were likely purchased for interior decorations in the United States in the early 20th century.
