Abstract
This study evaluates the growing presence of Korean art in the international art world through museum collections. It explores major U.S. museums with Korean art collections and examines their collection practices. Specifically, it investigates the impact of cultural diversity policy trends (DEAI) on Korean art collections and surveys their current status. Twenty major U.S. museums were selected, and 1,118 Korean artworks were analyzed by collection period, artist, collection route, and acquisition method. U.S. museums, which had intermittently collected Korean artworks mainly through gifts and donations, began expanding their collections in the 1990s and have significantly increased them since the 2010s. Initially, most collections were formed through gifts and donations, but recent collections have been primarily purchase-based. The number of purchased artworks now nearly equals those received as gifts. Based on this analysis, the study suggests strategies for sustaining and expanding Korean art collections in overseas museums.
