Abstract
This study analyzes the potential distribution of Paleolithic sites in Muju-gun, located in the upper area of Geum River basin in the eastern Jeollabuk-do region. To achieve this, a comprehensive review was conducted by comparing the local topography, geology, lithic technology, and raw material usage characteristics with those of nearby Paleolithic sites. As a result of the analysis, the Paleolithic sites in Muju-gun appear to have been formed by Upper Paleolithic groups on hill slopes of less than 15° facing river valleys, using rhyolite raw material. In particular, the presence of the "light brown layer" deposits and the availability of rhyolite raw material were evaluated as key factors influencing site distribution. Based on these findings, potential site distribution areas were identified as Bunnam-myeon, Muju-eup, Seolcheon-myeon, Mupung-myeon, and Anseong-myeon, with the northern part of Bunnam-myeon analyzed as the most promising area. This study serves as a preliminary investigation into the formation factors of Paleolithic sites in Muju-gun and proposes potential distribution areas. Further field surveys and analyses are needed to enhance the reliability of these findings.
