초록

Over the past decades, scholars have argued that the television program CSI: Crime Scene Investigation has increased jurors’expectations about how much forensic evidence is able to be collected, analyzed and presented in the court room. That is, jurors have developed unrealistic expectations of the quality of evidence that require to successfully convict a suspect which is known as the "CSI Effect” Some previous studies demonstrated that jurors who regularly watch CSI dramas or similar TV shows are more likely to place value on scientific and physical evidence. As a result, when a prosecutor fails to provide that physical evidence, jurors tend to decide that the defendant is not guilty. Although a number of researchers have studied the CSI Effect on jurors to date, most of these prior studies focused on the CSI Effect in the American jury system. Moreover, since there is virtually no study to thoroughly summarize and assess different studies on this particular topic, it becomes increasingly difficult to understand the CSI effect in the criminal justice systems. In order to fill this gap, the current paper attempts to provide a brief literature review about the CSI Effect and discuss the possibility of an existent CSI Effect among jurors.
