Abstract
GSR (gunshot residue) has been used as an important evidence to identify firearms in gun related crimes. GSR can be classified into inorganic GSR (IGSR) and organic GSR (OGSR), and IGSR particles generated from the primer gun are recognized as the most important evidence. However, if the detection of IGSR is insufficient, the presence of OGSR may complement the lack of IGSR evidence. Also, the detection amount of OGSR is utilized when determining the firing distance. Following the previously announced IGSR Review, in this review, through an integrated analysis of the OGSR review and related papers published in foreign countries, the author will discuss characteristics of the propellant powder, which is the source of the compound OGSR, analysis techniques, sampling methods and the detection of similar OGSR generated by the other environmental factors, the persistence over time, and the development direction of the recent analysis of OGSR compounds.
