Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the differences in the detection quantity of primer gunshot residue depending on the muzzle entrance in firearm suicides, the impact of changes in the ejection port direction on residue deposition at sampling sites, and efficient methods for collecting primer gunshot residue. Specifically, using a K-2 rifle, the total detected amount of primer gunshot residue {2·3Combo + single components (Pb, Ba, Sb)} was comparatively analyzed based on the ejection port direction, sampling sites, and residue composition in a shooting posture where the jaw and mouth served as the muzzle entrance. In cases where the muzzle entrance was the jaw and mouth, primer gunshot residue were detected at all sampling sites regardless of changes in the direction of the ejection port. Additionally, the detection quantity at the jaw was consistently higher than at the mouth, with a difference ranging from a minimum of 2.39 times to a maximum of 5.76 times. In cases where the muzzle entrance was the jaw, the detection quantity was highest in the breast, followed by the right arm and left arm, primarily due to the influence of primer gunshot residue emitted from the muzzle. On the other hand, in cases where the muzzle entrance was the mouth, the detection quantity was highest in the right arm, followed by the left arm and breast, due to the influence of Primer Gunshot Residue emitted from both the ejection port and the junction with the magazine. However, the detection quantity in the left and right arms was not biased by the direction of the ejection port. In South Korea, research on firearms remains limited. This study holds significant value as a standard model for reconstructing firearm-related incidents and determining whether a case is suicide or homicide. Additionally, it is expected to greatly assist forensic investigators in improving their field investigation capabilities.
