Abstract

In this article we reviewed the current research on psychophysiological states of various hypnotic states in order to determine whether the hypnotic investigation is reliable and scientifically justifiable. To study the neurophysiological mechanisms of the brain under hypnotic state, the results of EEG, ERP, PET studies during the hypnotic process were evaluated. From the EEG studies on the hypnotic state 40-Hz theta EEG activity was found to be produced. The ERP research results showed differential hypnotic susceptibility against stimuli. PET study showed differences in the brain region of activation under a state of hypnosis and increased activity in right hemisphere of the brain. Considering these results of more activation in the right hemisphere of the brain compared to the left hemisphere in the hypnotic state, it can be explained that the exact events witnessed can be remembered due to the right hemisphere activation compared to the left hemisphere which is active only to remember the incident that did not happen. The recovered memory gathered during the hypnotic precess can be more accurate than the memory recovered by normal physiological precess. As a technical tool for the recall of lost memories during the criminal investigation hypnotic investigation can be the most credible scientific investigative techniques among current various scientific techniques.
